The Chauncey Bailey Project reports that the Oakland Police Department’s internal affairs division, with support from the state Department of Justice, have dramatically expanded their probe into the investigation of the murder of reporter Chauncey Bailey. In addition to exploring charges that OPD homicide Sergeant Derwin Longmire may have ignored key evidence in the killing, the investigators are looking into whether Longmire’s bosses, Lieutenant Ersie Joyner and Deputy Chief Jeffrey Loman, allowed Longmire to pin the killing on Devaugndre Broussard, without looking into the leaders of the Your Black Muslim bakery. According to the Project, the three police officials are good friends and look out for each other, forming what one source called a “little protection network.”
