Slap Hitter: They're Coming Down the Stretch...

Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 5:15 PM

We may no longer live in a sports age that considers horse racing metaphors part of the lingua franca. Which is too bad considering people call the long campaign for President a "horse race". We still talk of "handicaps", "long shots" and "finish lines" but think of how much richer our dialogue would be if we could squeeze in "the chalk", "a boat race" or "an underlay"...even the double entendres would be great.

That being said, there's a non-figurative racing story in the political news. And it touches on the Presidential race as well. Senator Ted "Pipeline to my pocket" Stevens is on the tail end of this story, which warms my heart, knowing that there are still punters out there willing to play hooky to play the horses.

When the dust settles tomorrow, assuming no photo finish, we in the East Bay have loaded up on the favorite to wire the field. Until it hits the tote though, as we learned back in 2008, hold all tickets. Hmm, better yet, find those voters in Utah and let's hold theirs for them too.— Kibby Kleiman
