Daily Cal Endorsements

The Daily Californian has published its list of endorsements this year, so let's go to the tape!

Obama gets the nod for leader of the free world, and so do all the people who are already going to win their statewide and congressional seats anyway. Tom Bates gets the thumbs-up for mayor; the editors thought he had superior "interpersonal skills." (Note to Shirley Dean: you gonna take that lying down? We say you take all these editions and toss 'em right in the trash.) The paper likes Jesse Arreguin to replace Dona Spring, 'cause he's young and will stick it to Bates now and then. All the incumbents on the City Council get the paper's endorsement, including Susan Wengraf, who might as well be an incumbent. The D.C. likes Prop. 1A to build the bullet train, but hates the anti-marriage Prop. 8. (Incidentally, if the train passes and the marriage ban fails, we've already vowed to ditch the wife, find a cute homo, and marry him on the bullet train! How's that for commitment?) The editors like the library bond Measure FF, the park and fire station tax Measures GG and HH, and Measure LL, the effort to restore sanity to the landmark preservation process. They don't like the anti-BRT sledgehammer Measure KK or the let-potheads-make-medical-marijuana-a-joke Measure JJ. (Although, it must be said, their hostility to recreational dope seems a little intense. Relax, fellas, and toke up.)
