Looks like the MediaNews strategy to slash costs and focus on local news still hasn't paid off at its daily newspapers around the East Bay. On Friday, publisher John Armstrong sent out a memo announcing that he had just laid off 29 newsroom workers, effective July 11. Armstrong's memo, which was forwarded to Romenesko, declared that the papers were suffering ongoing losses in revenue; the East Bay unit will see revenue drop 17 percent this fiscal year, and projects another ten percent drop in the next year.
