After mulling over Ron Dellums' plan to shut down city government for twelve days, the Oakland City Council has come back with an alternate proposal, the Trib reports. Under a deal approved Tuesday night, the city would shut down government for five days between Christmas and New Year's Day, eliminate 26 empty city jobs, do a little cutting across the board, and wipe out the mayor's public safety director position, which is about to be vacated by Lenore Anderson. The cuts won't come close to closing the $15 million budget gap, of course, but neither will Dellums' plan. Whichever plan the mayor and the City Council settle on, look for more pain to come.
