Chris Kavanagh Lands in Jail

Chris Kavanagh, who served on the Berkeley rent board for years until questions were raised about whether he really lives in town, was sentenced to six months in jail yesterday. His crime? Registering to vote in Berkeley while he actually lives in Oakland. Now, six months for improper registration seems awfully steep, but according to the San Francisco Chronicle, prosecutors wanted to nab him for a lot more, including fraudulently voting in Berkeley elections, perjury, and theft of city stipends and health insurance. Immediately after agreeing to plead guilty, Kavanagh dismissed the plea as a mere technicality. That cavalier attitude apparently prompted the judge to drop the hammer on him. Remember kids: contrition is always prudent.
