.Are UC Researchers Sipping Margaritas in Tahiti?

The Contra Costa Times has a nice piece about a UC-owned research station on an island off the coast of Tahiti, where researchers and students can stay in tropical bungalows and cruise around in state-owned boats for $40 a night. Meanwhile, student fees are climbing, and California has to lay off teachers. UC officials claim that the outpost is a critical laboratory facility, where researchers study tropical life and the effects of global warming. Republican legislators suspect it’s just a sweet vacation spot on the public’s dime.
