UC Berkeley journalism graduate student Kevin Jones was sentenced today for his responsibility in a car crash a year ago that killed his passenger, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Halberstam. According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, his penalty includes five days in the county jail, and mandatory completion of a driving course and 200 hours of community service. The 27-year-old had been involved in two prior accidents in the last two years, according to prior Chron articles. One multi-vehicle accident, in March 2005, was determined to be Jones' fault, while the other a year later was minor. After investigation, officials determined Jones had made an illegal left turn on a red light, causing an oncoming car to crash into the passenger side of the vehicle. — Kathleen Richards
