Boy May Be Paralyzed

Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:49 AM

Every so often, a single event can exemplify a moment in time, or even an era. Such an event may have occurred yesterday afternoon when a 10-year-old boy was seriously injured by a stray bullet while taking piano lessons in North Oakland. The bullet reportedly went through a wall and struck him in the abdomen. According to a report on, authorities said the boy may be paralyzed from the waist down. The bullet was fired by a gunman who was robbing a gas station at 4:30 p.m. at the corner of Piedmont and Pleasant Valley avenues. The senseless shooting is a heart-wrenching example of the city's out-of-control crime problem. And it proves, yet again, that none of us is safe. -- Robert Gammon
