How much it’ll cost ya: $10 at the door, $5 for youth 13 to 18, free for 12 & under

Oakland Fashionistas Unite!
One of our coworkers stumbled upon this MeetUp group for the “Oakland fashion industry.” Sweet. The group started in June, has met three times, and already has thirty members (they seem to range from the everyday fashion obsessed to designers, models, and photographers). Looks like they’re planning a fashion show and their next meeting is Sept. 11. Check it out.

When It Pays (Er, Saves) to Be a Teacher
Teaching is such a thankless job. Not only do your students hound you about grades, ask for last-minute letters of recommendations, and completely ignore everything you say, but you also get paid squat. So the folks at Jeremy’s are rewarding you for your selfless deeds this weekend, by offering all pre-school, elementary, high school, and college teachers (with credentials and photo ID) an addition 40 percent off all merchandise, just in time for the new semester. With extended hours!
When: Sat. & Sun., Sept. 1 & 2, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
Where: 2967 College Ave., Berkeley, & Two South Park, SF

Wanted: Crafters
The San Francisco Craft Mafia is looking for a few good vendors for its “Mafia Made Winter 2007 Trunk Show,” which takes place in October at Golden Gate Park. They’re looking for any artisans, designers, or crafters, as long as the items are handcrafted by the applicant. Deadline for applications is Tues., Sept. 4. Click here for more info:

“Magical Outsiders”?
Every once in a while, the higher-ups in the fashion industry like to pretend they’re all about egalitarianism. Hence, this collection of fashion illustrations by thirteen artists from Oakland’s Creative Growth Art Center, which serves physically, mentally and developmentally disabled adult artists. The illustrations, commissioned by Paper Magazine, interpret designs from the fall 2007 collections, and will be featured in a window at Barneys New York from Sept. 4 to 25, and in the September issue of Paper. “How can anyone not love seeing this world we call fashion — which is usually such an insider’s game — so purely and gorgeously through the eyes of these magical outsiders?” said Paper’s co-editor and publisher Kim Hastreiter, who’s on the group’s advisory board. Don’t get us wrong: we think this concept is pretty cool. In fact, some of the interpretations are far more interesting than the real thing. (We especially like William Scott’s total disregard for the waif-y model in favor of his curvaceous “dream girl,” Yolanda Jones.) But “magical outsiders”? What are they, elves from Rivendell?
