Jeez, what’s a global oil and natural gas behemoth to do? Just when Chevron is planning to buy up assets of the old Russian petrogiant Yukos, the government of Kazakhstan is threatening to kick it out of the country altogether. According to a report in the Associated Press, Kazakh Environmental Minister Nurlan Iskakov has threatened to yank the company’s license to operate a massive Caspian Sea oil field unless it comes up with a plan to clean up the mess associated with the extraction, including 9 million metric tons of sulfur. Oh, and how much time does Chevron have to figure out how to remove all that hazardous waste? Try a month. Good luck with that, you cuddly petrochemical concern, you.
