Geek Crime on the Rise in B-Town

The Oakland Trib has a scare story today about "violent crime surging" in Berkeley, and while this year's numbers are indeed moderately higher than last year's -- 27 more robberies, 2 more rapes, and 2 more homicides (bringing Berkeley's total to 4, as compared with say, Oakland's 145 murders so far this year), does it really constitute a violent crime "surge" when the weapons in the majority of the city's 28 aggravated assaults are ... paintball guns? "Most were paintball attacks committed last summer by young people driving around and shooting paintballs at pedestrians or other drivers," the article explains. "Typically, they cause a small bruise on the skin." Yep, people, batten the hatches: it's the era of the paintball drive-by!
