Food Blogs Mostly Document Last Night's Cheese Sandwich

Oakland food writer Dianne Jacob checks in on the world of food blogs, which now count more than 200,000. Jacob offers links to hyper-focused meditations on airline meals (check out the shiny pulp served up on Azerbaijan Airlines) to a chef's organ-meat peccadillos. Most aren't nearly so fun, being exercises in examining whatever's breaking down in the blogger's digestive system. Former Chez Panisse pastry chef David Lebovitz is blogland's apologist: "The anti-blog piece in a national food magazine complained that too many blogs just recount last night's cheese sandwich, which is certainly true. But that's the beauty of the medium. You do what you want, write as you wish, and if you get readers, that's great. Even if you don't, it's still a valid form of self-expression."
