They Know His Name Now, Don't They?

In what maybe is the most unlikely outcome of the election, Democratic challenger Jerry McNerney ousted Richard Pombo, the incumbent Congressional Republican, 53 percent to 47 percent. McNerney, a wind-energy consultant, overcame unbelievable odds. Two years ago, he was a no name write-in candidate. And this year, the Democratic Party didn't step up to help him until the final weeks of the campaign. Environmental groups, however, helped his cause. And Pombo was wounded badly by his staunch support of President Bush and the Iraq war, along with his right-wing views on the environment and his own ethical lapses.
