Santa Clara County Bans Dispensaries It Doesn't Have

by David Downs
Wed, Jun 25, 2014 at 9:46 AM

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors temporarily banned medical cannabis dispensaries from operating in the unincorporated area of the massive South Bay county, as a prelude to a total and permanent ban, reports state.

County officials said the moratorium came in response to the City of San Jose’s new de facto ban posing as regulations. Santa Clara County feared San Jose’s regulations would push dispensary operators into unincorporated areas. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will consider a total ban by August 5.

California Medi-Pot Regs Lose Major Support

by David Downs
Tue, Jun 24, 2014 at 9:23 AM

Major marijuana law reform groups have begun to oppose a historic bill to regulate medical cannabis in California, citing the hundreds of thousands of patients in counties with bans that would remain without access.

Senate Bill 1262 would maintain California’s unworkable patchwork of bans and local regulations, depriving the neediest patients of access without protecting pot workers from prosecution, Drug Policy Alliance states in a June 23 analysis of SB 1262 posted to the California legislature’s website.

Los Angeles Dispensaries Dodging Ban

by David Downs
Thu, Jun 19, 2014 at 10:45 AM

San Jose, pay attention. You can't just wave a magic wand and make a vital, popular industry go quietly into the night.

Los Angeles’s 972-odd dispensaries are dodging city efforts to shut them down, partially thanks to a disconnect between police and the city finance department, new reports show.

Medi-Pot Rules Advance in Assembly

by David Downs
Wed, Jun 18, 2014 at 10:34 AM

California’s first statewide regulations on medical marijuana inched toward becoming law yesterday. The California Assembly’s Business, Professions and Consumer Protection Committee passed state Senator Lou Correa’s SB 1262 on a 10-2 vote Tuesday.

Americans for Safe Access California Director Don Duncan seemed optimistic about the bill, which is also endorsed by police and civic leaders. “We’re on the right track with this,” said the patient advocate.

Read San Jose’s New Dispensary Ban … Ahem, ‘Regulations’

by David Downs
Thu, Jun 12, 2014 at 11:26 AM

The San Jose city council will try another medical pot dispensary ban — again posing as regulations, reports indicate this week.

San Jose has about eighty operating dispensaries — some really good, some not so nice — due to an ongoing lack of regulations. New rules the council approved Tuesday would allow such outlets in about 1 percent of the city — and only if dispensaries somehow grew all their own supplies in Santa Clara or Santa Cruz counties. (Imagine your local Whole Foods farming its produce aisle within county limits.)

Weed-Infused Sex Lube Hits Market: Meet, Foria

by David Downs
Wed, Jun 11, 2014 at 11:19 AM

The first-ever marijuana-infused sexual enhancement product designed specifically for women has come to market. Meet: Foria.

The one-ounce, $88 spray bottle of “pre-lube” contains thirty servings of cannabinoid-infused coconut oil. Launching soon, it will only be available to medical cannabis patients in California.

The Southern California makers of Foria, dubbed “Aphrodite Group,” note that cannabis is one of the oldest known aphrodisiacs. (Weed’s main active ingredient, THC, mimics the neurotransmitter anandamide, which causes euphoria and can facilitate arousal.) The group tested its products on about 100 volunteers in and around the Bay Area.

Riverside Sues to Block Vote on Regulating Medical Marijuana

by David Downs
Tue, Jun 10, 2014 at 9:54 AM

Citizens of Riverside attempting to regulate dispensaries at the ballot box are facing off against an old foe — their own city council.

The City of Riverside has a total ban on all medical marijuana collectives operating in retail storefronts, so Riverside Safe Access gathered enough signatures to put dispensary regulations before a vote of the people.

But the city Council doesn’t want that vote to happen. The Riverside Press Enterprise reported  on Monday that the city council sued its own registrar June 4 as a way of blocking direct democracy. The council contends that regulating medical marijuana dispensaries — as dozens of California cities already have done — would violate federal law.

NYT’s Maureen Dowd Is Either An Idiot or a Provocateur — Maybe Both

by David Downs
Thu, Jun 5, 2014 at 10:23 AM

Popular New York Times columnist made weed waves this week when she flew to Denver, ate sixteen times the recommended dose of a marijuana edible and had a bad trip wherein she thought she had died.

Twitter is rightfully mocking her apparent lack of common sense.

Here is a professional New York media figure who parachuted into Denver specifically to riff on the implementation of legalization and its chief issue — that some people are eating way more pot brownies than they should and having bad experiences.
