California Legalization Initiative for 2014 Gets Tweaked

A proposed ballot measure to legalize pot in California in 2014 underwent some changes this week, increasing personal cultivation limits to six plants, among other minor alterations.

"The Control, Regulate and Tax Marijuana Act” from Drug Policy Alliance and a group representing the late Peter Lewis offers a modest form of legalization.

Blame Ongoing Pot Prohibition On Ignorant South

A new legalization poll and some data on high school drop-outs implicates ignorant people, many from the South, in our ongoing and disastrous national experiment with cannabis prohibition.

A Reason-Ruppe poll this week found that 49 percent of Americans favor pot legalization, versus 47 percent who don’t. Support correlates to education, the poll finds.

Harborside Celebrates First Place in Emerald Cup for Lemon Skunk

A grower for Oakland’s Harborside Health Center bested 260 other growers to win first place in Northern California’s premier pot competition — The Emerald Cup.

Billed as the "only outdoor organic medical cannabis competition in the world," The Emerald Cup drew 130 entrants from the pot-growing epicenter in Northern California known as the Emerald Triangle, as well as 130 entrants from further south.

San Jose Approves Tighter Dispensary Regulations, But Doesn't Ban Clubs

The San Jose City Council voted 8-3 last night to pursue tighter regulations on the eighty or so dispensaries in the city. Operators there feared the council would pursue a ban on all dispensaries, but as the meeting stretched late into the night, support for a ban did not bear fruit.

Sebastopol’s New Mayor Also Runs Two Medical Cannabis Dispensaries

The North Bay city of Sebastopol's new mayor, Robert Jacob, is also the founder of two licensed medical cannabis dispensaries called Peace in Medicine. Advocacy group Americans for Safe Access is lauding the historic, unprecedented move, saying it “illustrates the political strength and legitimacy of the medical cannabis movement.”
