MP3 of the Day - Panda

Wed, Jan 17, 2007 at 4:59 PM

Remember when you first "discovered" the Beatles? Obsessing over the wealth of pop songs and wondering how everything else sounded so mundane? Well, the teenaged members of Panda appear to be going through that phase. Big time. In fact, they're actually hoping to create their own Beatlemania ("Pandamonium"), not by just copping the Fab Four's style, but by exploring a fresh new take on popular sound. Thankfully, years of music lessons paid off because Panda's brand of neo-pop is imaginative and catchy (jaunty drum beats, tinkering piano, crescendos of guitar), even if their presentation is a bit juvenile. Their video for "Carry On" features them romping around their parents' Piedmont mansions and toying with things that are cool to teenagers, like fog machines, fireworks, bubbles, and lasers. Still, the proof is in the pudding. Last year, their debut EP was released by PopSmear Records, and they made it to the semi-finals of Live 105's local band contest for Not So Silent Night. They play on Friday, January 19 at Blake's. Listen to streaming samples online. -- Kathleen Richards
