.Sound by Its Cover: The Size Queens’ Is It IN Yet?

Today’s great mystery: Is the title to this CD a sexual innuendo? Is the name of this San Francisco group one too? We can’t see how they wouldn’t be, except that there’s nothing else alluring about the album. Not a thing. The cover art is borderline hideous, saved only by the long, slender blue cartoon leg and long, slender piece of wood that could well be (admittedly unexciting) phallic symbols. Are we reading into this too much? Or were we intended to jump to that conclusion? Either way, it’s about as funny as a kick to the groin.

The back of the record is all ugly, splotchy colors: nothing to inspire sexy thoughts, or for that matter a warmer response than Get this out of my face, now! Another Photoshop hack job, we’d hazard, especially given the plain black typeface (Arial?) and boringly straightforward application. One would expect something more professional from a band featuring Tim Mooney of great SF sad-sap lo-fi rock group American Music Club. A couple other confounding details: 1) the band’s publicity company is called Live Large Public Relations; and 2) 369 promo copies of Is It IN Yet? were issued, a number the press release calls “lucky.” Just what is going on in these people’s heads? (Oh, and while we’re on the subject of “is it in yet?” check this out; it’s hilarious.)

We found another band called the Size Queens — a trio of females in the Tucson area unafraid to embrace the overt sexuality of their name. They go by the pseudonyms sexpunk, cuddlepunk, and pornopunk, and their MySpace quote is “You’re gonna be my boy toy.” Now that’s more like it.
