Youth Lagoon

When: Sat., Oct. 5, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $25
Although Youth Lagoon (aka Boise, Idaho recluse Trevor Powers) now performs his intensely intimate songs with a four-man band — a change he made, in part, to help him perform on stages as massive as Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where he opened for The National this summer — it’s still a one-man show at heart. Powers makes psychedelic-infused music that’s delicate but poignant and affecting enough not to fade into the background. Though the substance he’s singing about is sometimes barely discernable, you can feel his fear of death, isolation, and sense of desperation clearly through the haze. Immerse yourself in his universe this weekend at Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., SF), where he’ll be joined by Pure X, a hauntingly emotive indie-rock trio whose 2013 album, Crawling Up the Stairs, was immaculately produced.
