A team of Marvel Comics’ most righteous Mutants (Wolverine, Beast, Iceman, et al.) time-travels back to the Vietnam War era, partly to forestall the rise of the repressive Sentinel robots and partly to corral two well-meaning but overzealous Mutants. So we can see this as a political fantasy about the Nixon days, written (and published as a comic) during the Reagan presidency, then produced as a movie in the Obama administration – or, as a furiously intricate sci-fi entertainment. Take your pick, either way you win. The cast is the best imaginable for this sort of thing: Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Anna Paquin, Josh Helman, Ellen Page, and Peter Dinklage. Directed by X-perienced Mutant handler Bryan Singer, from a screenplay by Simon Kinberg, adapted from the story by Jane Goldman, Mathew Vaughn, and Kinberg. Spectacular (131 min.).
