A regular contributor to the New York Times and public radio’s This American Life, Dan Savage is known for his frank, forthright, and hilarious discussions on sexuality. Readers of the East Bay Express enjoy his popular weekly column, “Savage Love”.
In response to a number of students taking their own lives after being bullied in school for being queer, and with the intent to inspire hope for young people facing harassment, Dan Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, began It Gets Better in 2010. The project, which began on YouTube, and later took on the form of a website, was created to show young LGBTQ people that they, too, can reach happiness in their lives if they can just get through the battlefield of junior-high and high school. The website with the videos is a simple and easily accessible remind to LGBTQ youth that they are not alone.
The It Gets Better social media campaign has already garnered 540,098 pledges on its website, www.itgetsbetter.org, from people all over the world. In addition, the YouTube portion of the campaign continues to receive home videos full of encouragement and hope for those facing darkness as they struggle to learn how to accept themselves.
