For nearly two years, ViV and a Movie has been providing San Francisco audiences with an opportunity to check out local film, art, and music in a plush bar setting -- the Red Devil Lounge. Now coming up on their hundredth show, the event's organizers have expanded eastward, because, says cofounder Matt Ostrander, "westward had too much water." Seriously, adds cofounder Chief O'Hara, "After almost two years in the city, we realized that there was an entirely different community of artists in the East Bay. Many of our very best films come from filmmakers in Berkeley or Oakland. By bringing the show to the east, we are giving artists who live there a chance to gain exposure in their own community."
When VaaM East had its "soft opening" on April 7 at iMusicast, O'Hara "spoke with several artists who showed their work last Wednesday and who have also participated in past VaaM events. They expressed how great it was to show their work just a few blocks from where they live." iMusicast, with its all-ages policy and live Webcast capabilities, opens up new and exciting avenues for these folks. "This will allow more of the local artists that are in school, but not yet 21, to be a part of the show that has been so successful in SF for the last two years," Ostrander explains. "When we met with Bryan Matheson [the owner of iMusicast], he shared a lot of the same ideas that we did." VaaM happens at iMusicast every Wednesday. "Each week, the content of the show will be completely different," O'Hara says.
This week's event features films such as Camera Car by Matt, Will Gordh's Dignity, Tales of Mere Existence by Lev (above), Hot & Run by Geoff Altman, Rafael Fernandez' Oregon, and Duality by Mark Thomas and Dave Macomber. There will be music by host band io, Francisco Aviles, and the Wildlife, and visual art by local practitioners of various media. iMusicast is at 5429 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. Admission for VaaM is $10, and the festivities begin at 7:30 p.m. Info: ViVandaMovie.com
