Wendy C. Ortiz

When: Wed., July 23, 7:30 p.m. 2014
Any good memoir is, at its core, an excavation of sorts, and Wendy C. Ortiz certainly has a lot to dig up and let out: As a lonely, isolated only child of alcoholic parents, the fifteen-year-old Ortiz fell in with a charismatic teacher at her private school. That relationship, which would ultimately last five years and land her teacher on the sex offenders’ registry, comes to define all of Ortiz’ future relationships — and, unsettlingly, provides Ortiz with the encouragement and adult attention that undoubtedly turned her into the writer she is today. Excavation is a thoughtful, tender, and uncommonly nuanced account of victimhood, predation, and the heartbreakingly blurry lines that separate them. See Ortiz read this week at Pegasus Books downtown (2349 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley).
