Wall Works 4

When: July 15-Sept. 29 2012

For the final show in Traywick Contemporary's fifteenth anniversary series, Katrina Traywick invited four artists to contribute site-specific work addressing the possibilities and constraints of her North Berkeley home-cum-gallery. The results, humorous and odd, playfully flirt with and subvert this semi-domestic venue's pull toward the decorative. Nancy Mintz occupies the central space with landscapes upholstered for the living room -- in woolly felt. Where a chandelier of cut crystal might hang, she instead suspends a fuzzy moon. Diana Guerrera-Mácia adorns the hallway with two wool-covered canvases that "speak" to one another, each echoing the modernist tradition of abstract geometry while undercutting it with sappy universal symbols: a rainbow here, a heart there. In a dynamic formal interaction with Traywick's architectural space, Benicia Gantner's vaguely organic vinyl collage work creeps, shoots, and blooms across the foyer, bringing this nook of the structure to life. Wall Works 4 runs through September 29 at Traywick Contemporary (895 Colusa Ave., Berkeley). 510-527-1214, or Traywick.com
