Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
Lived in Bay Area for hella years, now living in Korea... and having a blast!

I want Wall Street's role in the overall global economy to be less than it is today. It would be great to eliminate them from Oakland altogether.
However, Oakland has frequent management and corruption problems and may not be capable of managing a bank. If Wall Street isn't held accountable why would the Oakland bank be any different?
As a wise sage from the 20th century suggested, "the media is the message". And the message here is that the media you are using is creating data that is being used for someone else's profit and, in some cases, against you and your interests. Take action and disconnect from Fakebook, Pay Pal, Amazon, iTunes, etc.
It is amazing how almost any smallish business like Vintage Art and Music for the People are obligated to use Fakebook for publicity. It is even more amazing that the Express puts that fact on the front page of the story.
Rob Appledorn's many comments are escalating in vitriol and have nothing to do with the mayor of Oakland.
The NRA and gun manufactuers and their investors love it when the civilian and police body count rises. 2016 Orlando and Dallas massacres led to surges in gun stocks. A beautiful day for captialism can be a sad day for humanity. They hope we stay focused on blaming the police or blaming the poor and mentally ill, they need us to remain distraced from root cause as long as possible.
In South Korea, which has a strong and long duration of Western cultural influence, dog restaurants remain somewhat common and a choice for older Koreans who are feeling under-the-weather. The trauma of the dog being beaten adds stress-related chemicals to the flesh, which in turn are supposed to provide health benefits to the people who eat it. It is pricey meat. However, dog eating is not popular with younger Koreans and small dogs are increasinglng finding their way into apartment dweller homes as pets. Kudos for Berkeley City for flexing their soft power, but don't expect this practice in Asia to go away in the near future.
What this 924 drama says to me is that punk is probably quite dead and all that remains is a scene dominated by a dry, sober parody of life on the edge of rock... where censorship rules. I hope the boycott spawns a new club where punk can thrive in whatever twisted manner that fits the audience, and the 924 cult can maintain their harmony without being offended.
Some people who appreciated punk used to go to shows to hear and see the band they liked or who they identified with. Although I went to hear the Dead Kennedy's, I was afraid to attend Black Flag shows. Looking back on this it was silly because people threw bottles at DK shows too. Offensive language did not put me off as I was a punk rocker after all. What is punk without offensive language anyways? Nirvana? Green Day? The Go Go's? Chipmunk Punk? These were chart topping pop bands, not punk bands.
p.s. I heard and saw Ovarian Trolley at Continental in NYC around 1990. They were awesome! The guitar player smoked a cigarette on stage while he played and he looked so cool and dangerous.
