George Clooney once again shines as a slick corporate fixer with a hidden conscience. Here, for director Jason Reitman (Juno), Clooney is “termination facilitator” Ryan Bingham, who endlessly jets in and out American towns like Tulsa and Wichita, firing redundant employees by the hundreds and — his one true passion — racking up millions of frequent-flyer miles. On his trail, he meets a newly minted business-school piranha named Alex (Anna Kendrick, in a nice turn) and feels sorry for her. And maybe for himself. The screenplay, by Reitman and Sheldon Turner from Walter Kirn’s novel, sums up some of the most horrible trends of the 21st century (so far) into a handful of pointed, witty scenes and makes us laugh at them. Good job. With Vera Farmiga as a frequent shtupper (109 min.).
