It’s currently obon season in Japan, which means celebrating many matsuri (festivals) by sharing salty appetizers and cold beers outdoors with friends. For its second anniversary, Umami Mart is bringing that Japanese style of celebration to Downtown Oakland with a street food festival featuring all Japanese flavors. The specialty Japanese import shop has rounded up a mouth-watering group of vendors who will all be serving specially-made Japan-inspired dishes. Izakaya Trappist will be selling yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), Tamarindo will provide tako (octopus) tacos, Casa de Kei will be serving Japanese-inspired ceviche, and Bootleg Creamery will offer plum sake sorbet and matcha green tea ice cream — just to name a few of the participants. Team Print Shop will also be there live silk-screening beer coozies, and to complete the mood, DJ Chungtech will be spinning J-pop throwbacks. Whether you are a Japanese cuisine connoisseur or an intrigued newbie, the remixed traditional Japanese snacks will surely satiate.
