UC Berkeley Department of Music Improvisation Symposium Concert

When: Sun., March 17, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $20.50, $22.50

To non-musicians (and even to some musicians), improvisation might seem incomprehensible. Whereas playing a pre-written piece of music requires rote memorization, improvisation involves an entirely different set of skills, one that includes an attuned sense of listening to and dialoguing with others, as well as a solid foundation from which to deviate. The Improvisation Weekend, hosted by UC Berkeley's Department of Music, is three days devoted to mastering the art, a skill that could easily be applicable to other areas of life. The event, which brings together improvisers from all over the world to share and discuss their techniques, begins on Friday, Mar. 15, with a lecture and a concert featuring musicians from Mills College and UC Berkeley, and continues through the weekend, culminating in an improvisational symposium concert featuring such diverse instruments as piano (Myra Melford), harp (ZeenaParkins), koto (MiyaMasaoka), and Javanese gamelan (Midiyanto, HeniSavitri, Ben Brinner, Lisa Gold, Henry Spiller, and Peter Garellick). It should be mind-opening. At Freight & Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley) on Sunday, Mar. 17. 8 p.m., $20.50, $22.50, $10.50 for students before 7 p.m. For the full schedule: Music.Berkeley.edu
