Catherine Deneuve has never been more enigmatic, in all her icy blond authority, than as the title character in Luis Buñuel’s masterful tale of a cranky Spanish provincial nobleman (Fernando Rey) and the penniless young beauty who comes to live in his household when her mother dies. Don Lope (Rey) makes a show of championing workers, but treats his servants like dogs. Meanwhile Tristana, a compliant woman with a restless soul, undergoes a fundamental change: “The kinder he is to me, the more I despise him.” One of Buñuel’s thorniest melodramas, which is to say one of his finest. Screenplay by Buñuel and Julio Alejandro, from a story by Benito Pérez Galdós. (95 min.)
