Eccentric doc about an eccentric scientist with an eccentric project: painting a copy of Johannes Vermeer’s The Music Lesson
using a camera obscura and an arrangement of mirrors, to “prove” that the 17th-century Dutch artist used scientific methods to produce his fantastically detailed work. The combined maniacal fervor of Jenison and the filmmakers is just crazy enough to make us smile, for exactly eighty minutes (80 min.).
