If you’re looking for a dance party that’s soulful, affordable, and going down on this side of the bay, look no further than thePeople’s third New Year’s Eve party at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland). In addition to guest DJs Patrick Wilson, Jayvi Velasco, and Dion Decibels, Oakland singer-songwriter Valerie Troutt will also make an appearance. Troutt’s debut album, The Sound of Peace, which she released a few months ago, skillfully melds blues, soul, gospel, and jazz. Her rich, powerful voice pours over simple arrangements, caressing them with emotion. On other tracks, she’s more energetic, sounding playful and lighthearted as she’s joined by funky, swinging horns. Troutt, whose music is thoughtful and optimistic, will be the perfect antidote to the debauchery normally associated with the evening. Local artisans will also be on hand selling their wares, and artists will be painting on-site. There will even be a balloon drop.
