Conceived in 1975 as an all-African-American Broadway musical of The Wizard of Oz, The Wizhas remained hugely popular as a stage musical due to showstopping R&B-fueled numbers like "Ease on Down the Road" and the gospel-style "Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News." It's also a favorite with the kids, as evidenced by the fact that there are three productions of The Wiz running back to back in the EastBay this month. ContraCostaChristianTheatre's summer campers are doing it August 8 and 9 at Pleasant Hill's DVCPerformingArtsCenter, and Stage Door Conservatory's On Broadway Ensemble perform it August 22 to 24 at the Julia Morgan. Although Belasco Theatre Company is usually a youth troupe, its version playing August 7 to 22 at Malonga Arts Center (1428 Alice St.,Oakland) is performed by a mix of teens and adults.
