Better-than-average coming-of-age dramedy earns points for the dialogue by writing/directing partners Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (The Descendants), as defeated fourteen-year-old Duncan (Liam James) finds his way through a potentially terrible beach town summer vacation in the company of his mom (Toni Collette), her bullying new boyfriend (Steve Carell), and the boyfriend’s snooty teen daughter (Zoe Levin). Luckily for Duncan, there’s Water Wizz amusement park with its cool boss (Sam Rockwell at full throttle), and the pretty blond next door (AnnaSophia Robb). Adolescence should be so sweet. The romping cast also includes Allison Janney and Amanda Peet. Filmmakers Faxon and Rash turn up, winningly, as Water Wizz employees. (103 min.)
