The challenge for writer Chris Galletta and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is to show us something new, or at least not mind-numbingly stupid, in the coming-of-age field. They succeed, to a degree, with the story of three teenage boys who build a clubhouse in the woods and try to sort things out apart from the rest of the world. It has some style, even though the arch dialogue and the presence of one of the three, Biaggio, a sort of comic-relief gremlin played by Moises Arias, reminds us of the worst excesses of John Hughes and Wes Anderson. Nick Robinson and Gabriel Basso are pretty good as best friends Joe and Patrick. Likable and humane, with telltale hints of a grand scheme. (97 min.)
