Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) has a problem with a fictionalized account of the catastrophic tsunami that engulfs a family of British tourists as they vacation in Thailand in 2004 — the tidal wave is so horrifyingly realistic, everything that follows is anti-climactic. Naomi Watts and young actor Tom Holland turn in gratifying performances as the mother and her teenage son, with Ewan McGregor as the dad. But virtually everything in Bayona’s film takes a back seat to the power of the angry sea. As it probably should. It’s not nice to second-guess Mother Nature. Screenplay by Sergio G. Sánchez (114 min.)
