Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine’s doctored documentary explains what happened in 1929, when a pair, then a small colony, of European utopia-seekers descended on the uninhabited island of Floreana in the Galapagos. It wasn’t pretty, and the doc makes an inescapable point about human nature and the search for paradise on earth. But maybe it would have worked better as a narrative adaptation. To fill it out, the filmmakers cast Cate Blanchett, Thomas Kretschmann, and other actors in voice roles as some of the principal subjects – wish we could see them onscreen instead of as fillers in the period home movies. A nutty real-life forerunner of Survivor
and Gilligan’s Island
