The dramatized adventures of crusading journalist/international bad boy Julian Assange and his whistle-blowing news org WikiLeaks make a tidy bookend with Alex Gibney’s WikiLeaks doc We Steal Secrets, but the story is probably too wide-ranging and complicated for easy movie treatment. Character actors Benedict Cumberbatch (as Assange) and Daniel Brühl (as his early tech ally, Daniel Berg) put a human face on the milieu of socially committed hackers determined to right wrongs and scoop the competition no matter what, and director Bill Condon does what he can to background them. But we always end up wanting to know more. Amongst the supporting cast: David Thewlis, Alicia Vikander, Moritz Bleibtreu, Laura Linney, and Stanley Tucci. Not the last WikiLeaks film and probably not the worst, it will eventually sit somewhere in the middle. Screenwriter Josh Singer adapted the screenplay from a pair of books, one of them by participant Daniel Domscheit-Berg (128 min.).
