Actress Britt Marling, of the cool blondness, once more gets into undercover infiltrator predicaments under the guidance of filmmaker Zal Batmanglij, with whom she made The Sound of My Voice. This time Marling plays Sarah, a resourceful, icily determined chameleon sent by sinister corporate security exec Patricia Clarkson to spy on the title band of lethal eco-terrorists. Little could anyone — other than the audience – predict the effect The East’s handsome leader (played by Alexander Skarsgård) might have on the otherwise dedicated Sarah. Batmanglij’s screenplay, written with Marling, is a more tightly composed variation on the earlier film’s framework, with the added attraction of some genuine right-wrong ambiguity between the angry enviros and their one-percenter adversaries. Good characterizing by Marling and Skarsgård, as well as Ellen Page as a rich-kid-turned-rebel. Not to put too fine a point on it. (116 min.)
