The Break with Kev Choice and DJ D-Sharp

When: Sun., April 8, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: free, $10

DJ D-Sharp and emcee-pianist Kev Choice have a long history of collaborations, dating back at least to 2007, when they both served in Lauryn Hill's internationally-touring band -- Choice as keyboardist and music director, Sharp on turntables. Now, they're hosting a weekly event dedicated to classic hip-hop, some of which Kev has transcribed and interpreted for his new band, The Vamps. Each week has a different theme (e.g., "Bay classics" or "fresh vibes"), though the basic template remains the same. Sharp regales audiences with his near-encyclopedic knowledge of pop music, while Choice provides live instrumentation. It's a daring concept for a DJ night, but these two artists have the wherewithal, and the credibility, to make it work. At Era Art Bar (19 Grand Ave., Oakland) on Sunday, Apr. 8. 9 p.m., free before 10 p.m., $10. OaklandEra.com
