Tango Buenos Aires

When: Fri., Jan. 21, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $22-$52

Oh, the irony - the tango, which originated in the cabarets and bordellos of Buenos Aires, is today a staple of buttoned-up ballroom dancing. But Argentina's cultural ambassadors Tango Buenos Aires still dance it the old-fashioned way: dramatic, seductive, passionate. The ten-member troupe shows how it's done at Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Ave. at Dana St., Berkeley) on Friday, January 21, in its show Fuego Tango y Pasión (Fire and Passion of Tango). Comprising classic and modern variations on the tango, Fuego combines spectacular solos, duets, and ensemble dances accompanied by a quintet that includes a bandoneón for that essential concertina sound. Latin-jazz specialist (and past Express contributor) Jesse "Chuy" Varela and special guests will discuss the company's history during a free 5 p.m. Lobby Talk. 8 p.m., $22-$52. 510-642-9988 or CalPerformances.org
