Eating at Sushi Sho is defined by idiosyncratic “rules” and restrictions: No reservations; no seating except at the bar (there are tables, but those function as a waiting area); no extra wasabi proffered aside from what chef Akitoshi Kawata (“Aki-san”) has already placed in each piece of sushi. And there’s not much on the menu apart from traditional, simply-prepared sushi. Despite these limitations — or perhaps because of them — Sushi Sho is one of the best sushi restaurants in the Bay Area. You can’t go wrong with Kawata’s nigiri, but the cold-smoked salmon and the mentaiko (salted cod roe) are particularly stunning. And the “unokyu-maki Special A” roll perfectly blends the smokiness of grilled eel, the salty pop of flying fish roe, the crunch of cucumber, and the creaminess of avocado.
