Summer of Video Art 2012: Futuring the Past, Pasting the Future

When: Aug. 3-25 2012

Let's be frank: Video is not the most approachable of art forms. Maybe it's the temporal component ("How long will this require me to stand here?"), or the hegemony of silver screen-style cinema, condemning shirkers of conventional narrative as intentional bores. Whatever the reason, Krowswork owner/director Jasmine Moorhead found that "when I put a video among other non-video works, people will tend to avoid the video." So Moorhead simply did away with non-video works for her celebratory exhibition, Summer of Video Art 2012: Futuring the Past, Pasting the Future. The twelve featured artists present videos that transfix with rhythmic simplicity, stimulate with spasmodic imagery, and engage with the immediate environment through live video and 3D modeling, many of them interrogating the ever interrelated themes of nostalgia and science fiction. There's even some classic rock. Under such circumstances, viewers, Moorhead finds, become receptive to the unique magic video has to offer. Futuring the Past, Pasting the Future runs through August 25, with special screenings on August 17 and August 24 at 8 p.m., at Krowswork (480 23rd St., Oakland). 510-229-7035 or Krowswork.com
