Steel Cranes

When: Sun., Sept. 1, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $6
The languid, bluesy, distorted riff of “Boat Song” — the first single from Steel Cranes’ forthcoming debut album, Ouroboros — may instantly remind you of The Black Keys, but there’s an emotional rawness to this up-and-coming Oakland-based guitar-drums duo that feels a bit more down-to-earth. Credit drummer Amanda Schukle — whose style mixes straightforward, driving beats with a stuttering, falling-down quality — and guitarist/vocalist Tracy Shapiro, whose upfront vocals and dirty licks give the garage-y band a heavy-yet-sassy quality (best heard on the post-breakup anthem “Moving On”). Catch Steel Cranes when it celebrates the release of its Boat Song seven-inch at the Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St., San Francisco), with Tik Tok and Flamingo Pink.
