J.J. Abrams reboots the future in Star Trek, and in the process resurrects a franchise most thought was dead. This was accomplished by jumping back in time (from Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s The Next Generation) to the first adventure James T. Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy shared aboard the Enterprise — before even the original television series. Thanks to a nifty time-traveling Spock (Leonard Nimoy) from the future of the, er, future, Abrams manages to reshuffle canon a bit and lend a sense of surprise to the proceedings. Recasting is admirable (especially Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban as Spock and McCoy), and the action will make newbies want to up and join Starfleet (126 min.).
