Smart Stuff Comedy

When: Fri., Jan. 31, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $12 in advance, $15 at the door
In his Comedy Central special in 2006, Bill Santiago boldly tackled sensitive and complicated topics, including politics and racism, joking: “Mexicans get shot trying to get into this country, Cubans get shot trying to get out of their own country, Puerto Ricans get shot just for trying to have a country.” The Puerto Rican comic’s pull-no-punches style has paid off, landing him an appearance on The Late Show with Conan O’Brien and a book deal, which resulted in Pardon My Spanglish, Santiago’s hilarious take on the fusion of languages. This Friday, Santiago will bring his sophisticated, George Carlin-esque sense of humor to La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley), where he’ll deliver a set covering topics such as religion, science, and parenthood. For those interested in seeing a comic who isn’t only after cheap laughs, this performance is not to be missed.
