How do French women manage to eat so much cheese, smoke so many cigarettes, and still stay so sexy? The answer may be that they understand the importance of fabulous underwear. While American chicks typically buy dowdy Hanes Her Way briefs, their French counterparts invest in racy silk-and-lace contraptions that can quicken the pulse of the most apathetic mate. But the French designer styles at A la Folie, a quaint North Oakland boutique, aren't created for male tastes alone. "High-end lingerie is made for comfort and fit," explains owner Nafissa Tayebi. "Women buy it for themselves as much as for their partner or mate." These bras and knickers don't come cheap: Bra sets range from $120 to $350, while negligees and loungewear run $85 to $300. Sure, it's pricey; then again, Target doesn't offer custom lingerie fittings for groups of girlfriends. A la Folie offers invitations, catering, and even floral arrangements and champagne as a classy yet slightly naughty alternative to the normal bachelorette party, or even just a luxurious soiree with friends. And the fact that the shop stocks unmentionables in sizes up to 38DD means those of us more endowed in the bust area can still get in on the action.
