An American psycho in Paris. Simon (Brady Corbet), a young New Yorker on the run from a thwarted relationship, seems to ruin each and every encounter he has with other people, often with violent results. When he partners up with a Pigalle bar girl named Victoria (Mati Diop) we fear the worst, and writer-director Antonio Campos does not disappoint. Or rather, he and Simon disappoint us so totally that it no longer matters. Filmmaker Campos claims to have been inspired by novelist Georges Simenon, but Simon and Victoria’s trip to the lower depths bears the familiar thumbprints of producers Josh Mond, Matt Palmieri, and Sean Durkin — that is, a queasy-making hyper-reality in which everything takes on a sinister glow. Not for everyone, in fact generally disrecommended for anyone except those who admired Martha Marcy May Marlene. (105 min.)
Director: António Campos
Producer: Sean Durkin, Josh Mond and Matt Palmieri
