This calm, sensitive coming-of-age narrative by Swedish director Lisa Ohlin is also a Holocaust drama, as the title kid interacts with a Jewish classmate and his family – and makes startling discoveries – during and after WWII in his provincial hometown. Contains more than one emotionally potent scene and never takes the easy shortcuts with its large cast of characters. Bill Skarsgård, the son of actor Stellan, does a fine job with the complex role of the grownup Simon, alongside Stefan Gödicke, Jan Josef Liefers, and Helen Sjöholm as some of Simon’s multi-faceted family and friends. The screenplay, by Ohlin, Marnie Blok, and Linda Aronson, is adapted from the novel by Marianne Fredriksson. (122 min.)
