Shannon and the Clams

When: Thu., April 25, 9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $8

Shannon and the Clams make some of the most fun retro-tinged, surf-soaked garage rock in the Bay Area — but the band's charming, tightly woven beach pop numbers appeal to more than just nostalgia junkies. As niche as Shannon and the Clams seems, its music feels somehow expansive, universal. Much of this comes from Shannon Shaw's voice, which turns every song into a visceral experience. Shaw boomerangs from gravelly to wretched to rapturous, easily hitting some of the more wounded-heart notes before plunging into a bewitchingly hellish growl. Add to that woozy background harmonies, old school twang-y guitars, spacey percussion, and wail-worthy lyrics, and you get a record like 2011's profoundly danceable Sleep Talk, a collection of songs that feels like they were written for every breed of dreamer, outcast, and lover. Shannon and The Clams will perform with Fuzz and Scrapers at Stork Club (2330 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Thursday, Apr. 25, 9 p.m., $8. StorkClubOakland
