In keeping with the macrobiotic maxim that too much spice overstimulates the nerves and numbs the taste buds, many of the dishes devised by Manzanitas kitchen staff are so subtly seasoned that they might strike garlic- and chipotle-callused palates as unseasoned. Salt, soy sauce, miso, and sesame make a delicate showing in the velvety soups that are this restaurants star turn, and in other original mélanges of veggies, beans, grains, and tofu many of which feature unusual ingredients such as parsnip and kale. Good for you! these dishes declare; a mixed blessing.
